Veterans Memorial Committee Meeting Minutes June 28, 2011
Present: Bob Dickinson, Fred Mellish, Edith Stillson, Ernie Shand, Lisa Slade, deForest Bearse
1. Approve minutes from the last meeting: May 24, 2011 Bob Dickinson motioned to approve the minutes as presented. Edith Stillson seconded the motion and all were in favor.
2. Roll of Honor The roll of honor has been published on SAPA TV, posted on the Town's website, sent home with the Weathersfield School students, and posted at the post offices, the library, the Town Office, and Ascutney Market. Several names have been added to the list due to the publicity. It was decided that the request for names be placed in the Eagle Times and the Valley News free announcement sections. We will stop looking for names after the 250th celebration.
3. Future use of first engraved boulder The committee would like to have the boulder added to the pile of other rocks left over from the project at Aaron's for future use if needed, if it's okay with Aaron.
4. Update on educational component The committee will take a more active role in working with the teachers and principal of the school in order to help get the school more on board with the educational part of the committee's goals. Ideas included doing a presentation at an all-school assembly on Memorial or Veterans Day each year and doing additional presentations in individual classrooms during the school year.
5. Reimbursement of expenses for 250th celebration Bob Dickinson motioned to reimburse Lisa Slade in the amount of $51.08 for supplies for the 250th celebration. Edith Stillson seconded the motion and all were in favor.
6. Update on Walk-a-Thon This year's walk-a-thon raised $290. The money has been deposited into the committee's agency fund.
7. Update on overall financial status There is $15,000 left in the grant and $7,109.20 in the agency fund. Chip would like to see the grant spent in its entirety as soon as possible. He suggests spending $8,000 for the educational component and $7,000 for the names presentation.
Ideas for the educational component include infrastructure in the "real estate" set aside for the ed component at the school ( shelving, plexiglass casing for artifacts and mementoes, flat-screen TV, DVD player, books, publications, etc.) The exact location of this "real estate" is as yet unknown.
It was agreed that we would invite Shannon Stevens and Jeremy Osgood to our next meeting to design the names presentation exhibit. The meeting will be held at the monument.
8. Other Business None.
9. Comments from citizens None.
10. Adjournment At 7:44 PM, Lisa Slade motioned to adjourn the meeting. Bob Dickinson seconded the motion and all were in favor.
The next meeting will be held on Monday, July 18, 2011 at 6:30PM at the monument on the Perkinsville Green.
Respectfully submitted, deForest Bearse
