Ascutney Basin Bridge Replacement

Public Notice

Pursuant to Executive Order 11988 (Floodplain Management) and Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA) implementing regulations at Title 44 of the Code of Federal Regulations Part 9, FEMA hereby provides final notice of its decision to provide Public Assistance Program funding for an action located in a floodway. Funding would be provided through Vermont Emergency Management to the Town of Weathersfield, VT to repair the Ascutney Basin Bridge on Ascutney Basin Road.
The proposed project would replace the bridge deck and reuse the abutment and wingwalls. A temporary bridge, which was installed to the south, will be removed and the site restored.
The project is within a mapped special flood hazard area (regulatory floodway). The bridge would remain in the floodway; however, installing a solid concrete slab bridge deck is expected to make the bridge more resistant to impact loads and inundation. A map of the area of available upon request.
Alternatives considered include relocation, full replacement, increasing the bridge span over the river, and “no-action.” The proposed action would help retain the remaining service life of the bridge substructure, and it was the most financially practicable option. Grant conditions will require compliance with all federal, state and local laws, including coordination with the local floodplain administrator and permitting from US Army Corps of Engineers and the VT Department of Environmental Conservation’s River Management Program.
Map requests and comments about this project and potential floodplain impacts should be submitted within 15 days of the date of this publication to:
